Bangor, New Jersey * -- The New Jersey Express-Times reports that the Bangor borough council has opened the streets to skateboarders, but with a tight stipulation.
The council amended a 1990 * ordinance prohibiting skateboard riding on public property to allow for a skateboarding event May 7.
Mayor Joe Capozzolo made it clear that Bangor was still a skateboard-free community.
"This amendment is only good for borough-sponsored events," he said. "This does not mean anyone can just say they want to start up an event and allow skateboarding."
Last month, Bangor Main Street Association representative Linda Demansky asked borough officials to allow young skateboarders to compete on the streets for the event.
She said the skateboarding event would be held downtown, closing off a portion of Broadway from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, and that the event would be limited to 40 competitors age 12 to 18, who would be required to sign liability waivers.
"We want our teenagers to know that we understand their interests and that we support their sports," she said at last month's meeting.
