Jenkintown, Pennsylvania * -- The Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship * announced that professional skateboarder Mike Vallely * has pledged to sponsor a $2,000 college scholarship. Mike Vallely joins a distinguished list of scholarship sponsors including The Tony Hawk Foundation *, Activision * Tony Hawk's Underground, Mountain Dew and Jones Soda.
Mike V on why he got involved: "This scholarship is really just about giving back to skateboarding. I chose to create the 'Stand Strong Scholarship' in the hope that I could in a small way participate in the future of skateboarding and in the life of the inspired individual who receives the award."
"There are not many places for skateboarders to turn to for aid and support," continued Mike V. "The Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship is one, and I have been honored to be a board member since its inception. This year I'm glad to say I am also personally sponsoring a scholarship and it's something I hope to continue to do for many years to come."
The recipient of the scholarship, to be known as the Mike V. 'Stand Strong' scholarship, will be chosen for their activism on behalf of skateboarders. The application deadline is April 20, 2005 *, and application information is available at www.skateboardscholarship.org.
Mike Vallely has been a skateboarder for 20 years, is the lead singer of the band Mike V. and the Rats, host of his own television show - Drive TV - and is featured in the Activision Tony Hawk's Underground video series. He is also an activist, poet, husband, and father, and a board member of the Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship.
The Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is reportedly the only college scholarship fund for skateboarders in the United States *. It was created in memory of 15-year-old Patrick Kerr, an honor student and devoted skateboarder. With the support of the national skateboarding community, the skateboard scholarship is entering its third year of offering college scholarships to skateboard activists.
