‘No Skateboard’ Ordinance in Paris
( Air Date: 8/27/02 )
A Paris city ordinance and a litter problem leave kids with no place to go. Skateboarding and biking are popular activities for all
youngsters, but ... Paris kids are having a tough time doing either one.
The Paris City Council approved an ordinance Monday night, banning all skateboards from city streets and sidewalks. Bikes were also
banned on the sidewalks, but are allowed in the streets. The ordinance gets kids off the streets permitting skateboarding only in the
designated skateboard park downtown, but now, that park is closed because of kids littering. This means kids have nowhere to
skateboard and few places to ride their bikes. Some kids we spoke to Tuesday night didn`t even know about the ordinance. They say
they understand why the park is closed for now, agreeing that litter is a problem. But they don`t agree with the new ordinance. The
Paris Beacon-News reports that police were told to start enforcing the "no skateboard" ordinance immediately, but ironically the
skateboard park is in the parking lot of the police department. And as we watched the kids bike and skate around, a cop car drove
by, and did nothing.
