Skatepark * on the right
tracks
Plans to stop teenagers hanging around the streets of
Denbighshire have moved a step closer.
Youngsters and their parents have been campaigning
for a skatepark on the outskirts of Denbigh for nearly a
year.
The arena will cater for
people with skateboards,
BMX bikes, scooters and
roller skates.
More than 100 children
have formed a committee
to deal with the scheme
and after months of
discussion a site has been
earmarked for the
development.
Chairman David Neal said:
"We have found an ideal
site within walking distance
of the town centre and the
local council has agreed to
buy it."
However the land has not yet been sold to the group
and they are waiting to reach a financial agreement.
In the meantime the
youngsters are being taken
on a tour of other skateparks *
in Wales.
In three weeks time
organisers will take up to 15
children to Swansea and
Cardiff to gain ideas about
their own initiative.
Mr Neal said: "We are taking
this very seriously, at the
moment Denbigh is over run
with kids with nowhere to go,
they don't even have a park.
"We want our scheme to be free for everyone to use
and it can be as big as we like from a massive
European * effort to a couple of home made ramps."
Committee members are hoping to receive objective
one funding and they have also written to Sportlot for a
grant.
If the money is raised and they get planning
permission, they hope the ramps will be ready for action
by the end of 2002 *.
